Field Trips
Field trips form an important part of the RASA student's education. During the 2007-08 school year, RASA students enriched their classroom knowledge with the following off-campus experiences:
FMA Live! strives to engage middle-school students in math and science through a live, ground-breaking stage show that travels cross-country demonstrating the amazing science in kids’ everyday lives. Featuring high-energy actors, music, video and demonstrations FMA Live! teaches Forces and Motion and the process of scientific inquiry in an innovative, entertaining, and memorable way. FMA Live! not only delivers solid science that supports the learning objectives of the National Science Education Standards for grades 5-8, but also helps kids learn that science is key to understanding the world around them.
RASA students attended this event sponsored by NASA, courtesy of Willow Creek Middle School PTSA. The event was held at the century High School auditorium. For the FMA Live presentation in powerpoint, please click here: http://www.fmalive.com/_downloads/forces_motion_lesson_plan.pdf
Masque Theatre
The purpose of The Masque Youth Thetare is to develop the creative potential of the young people of Southeastern Minnesota
through active participation in a youth theatre which recognizes, respects and nurtures their growth and encourages the development of social relationships with all age groups through the theatre arts experience. As inquirers and communicators, RASA students attend all regularly scheduled school performnaces at the Masque. This year the performances include: BFG (october 2007); Pickle Chiffon Pie (decmber 2007); and the Emperor's New Clothes (February 2008). RASA students read the play in class prior to attending the shows so that they are fully able to appreciate the depth of the drama.
Mayo Eugenia Litta Children's Hopital, Mayo Clinic
As part of their health unit in science class, students in Level I and II visit the mock pediatric intensive care unit at Mayo Eugenia Litta Children's Hopital, Mayo Clinic. The idea is for them to experience the ICU setting without actually being a patient, but each of the students gets a chance to role play doctor, nurse and patient.
The Come & See program originated at
The entire program is geared to the first grade student from the small chairs, to the role-play and take-home materials. It is as true to life as possible without actually being admitted to the hospital. The staff affirm how helpful it is for them when children have had this introduction to the hospital prior to any subsequent hospitalization. The program has been tied to the curriculum unit on people who help us.
